Year 7 Project Evaluation
In 2005, all 11-16 year old pupils across the borough of Halton were given the opportunity to participate in a Communities that Care Survey. Completed anonymously, the survey asked pupils about risk and protective factors in their lives - within their families, schools and the community. Analysis of the survey results indicated that Year 8 marked a significant increase in risk-taking behaviours among young people. HITS was asked to develop and deliver a term long (12 week) preventative project targeting Year 7 pupils in each of Halton’s 8 High Schools. The Year 7 Project draws on a theory base that suggests a link between young people’s propensity towards risk taking behaviour and aspects of their emotional health and mental well-being. The aim of the Project was, therefore, to reduce young people’s vulnerability to inappropriate risk taking by increasing their knowledge and awareness, and improving their confidence and social skills.
